A bill introduced to protect women’s right has been rejected by the Senate. The bill was introduced by Senator Abiodun Olujimi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Ekiti South, during the senate’s plenary session. During the lead debate, Senator Olujimi explained that the bill is intended for women to have equal rights with men in marriage, education, and employment. She said the discrimination against women is appalling and that the bill will help curb the unfair treatment against women.

Some senators, mainly from the north criticized the bill on the basis of religion. Senate Majority leader, Ali Ndume, Senator Sani Yerima from Zamfara state were amongst the senators that criticized the bill, arguing that it is against Islamic religion.
