The Herdsmen Imbroglio- #NoNamaMeat
Every day in the last 2 years many are dying, it seems the way things are going, many lives are at-risk and many more will still die. When will the blood letting and spilling stop? Imagine this scenario: A farmer leaves home in the morning to tend to his yam plantation in the village farmland. In the afternoon, his pregnant wife and three children (ages 9, 13 and 16) join him. They arrive to meet him taking a small break while waiting for the meal they brought along with them. The Eru family settle down after greetings to share the meal along with their neighbors who are farming the next farmland. Hours later, the Eru’s and other farming families with the day’s work done were heading home. The conversation was the recent killings by Fulani herdsmen in the neighboring community. As they meandered through the bush paths, they heard gun shots and sounds of battle cry in a strange language. It is the herdsmen, we must hide Okeya said. As Eru said yes in response to his clansman, he heard the wail of his pregnant wife as she dropped to the ground like a felled tree. As his eyes met her bleeding hip and anguish, he could not hold his cry. Do you think there will be any justice for the Eru’s, considering the deafening silence from the current administration?
The question is Nigerians, it does not matter if you are Igbo, Yoruba, Igala, Tiv, Igede, Idoma, Birom, Efik, Hausa, Kanuri etc. justice for any citizen is justice for all. Many are wondering, when will this stop? Your government has not been able to do it, but you can certainly do something from tomorrow. Perhaps, the answer should be no nama (cattle) meat, #NoNamaMeat. The Fulani herdsmen must recognize that the farmers and communities they are incessantly attacking are the same people that patronize them. They are the ones that buy those nama meat that give them livelihood. There is a long adage that goes “you don’t bite the fingers that fed you”. If the Fulani herdsmen choose to continue to maim and destroy these farmlands and attack farmers, then people should stop buying cattle and stop eating the meat thereof for the next 2 months. Call it a fast, call it denying yourself to stop this carnage, let us do it now #NoNamaMeat.
